I dont’ know if life will ever slow down enough to actually get my house in order but at least we are having a great time here. Here are more random updates on things we have done lately.
On Labor Day we went to a new beach on Sesoko Island, a little island separate from the island we live on. We had to cross over a really long bridge to get there. It’s a great beach because there are cliffs all along the edge that provide shade for the little kids and tons of cave exploration for the kids Hayden’s age. He had so much fun running around having adventures with all the other boys. There is quite a crew of boys ages 4-8 among our group of friends. Alyssa got tired and took a nap in a portable pack n’ play that one friend had brought and Danica dug in the sand all day. That left Tom and I free for some awesome snorkeling. We went out past wear the waves were breaking and snorkeled in the waves, it was my first time really out in the ocean and it was awesome. I got a little nervous a few times thinking I was going to float away and get too tired to get back but I was wearing my new fins and everything worked out just fine. We snorkeled above some really cool trenches and saw tons of fish.
Those of you who know us well are probably still reeling over the fact that was ate some authentic Japanese food given the only place we ate before was Red Robin. So you’ll be shocked again to know that last week when we went out we joined some friends at a Korean BBQ grill wear you grill your own meat right at your table. It was a cool experience and a lot of the food was actually good. Afterwards our friends took us to arcade with a 4D movie theater and we got to pretend we were escaping from a dinosaur attack, very funny. I think the best part of the night was the fact that we had actually hired a babysitter, a new young woman who has recently moved here and attends church with us. She is young but very responsible and we had them over for dinner and a few things so knew her well enough I felt comfortable and relaxed knowing she was doing a good job. And, when we got the home the kids were asleep, the toys were cleaned up and she’d done the dishes! I took her home and we sat and relaxed- sooooo worth the money!!!!! Now I am trying to make up excuses to go out again!
We have enjoyed going to more rollerslides and Danica proves to be quite fearless. She loves flying down the slides. Alyssa hates them and cries as soon as we get to the top. We are still working on getting Alyssa walking, she is getting closer and pushes around her walker and chairs and stuff to walk with. Currently her obsession is to push the farm toy on the fridge so that it plays music and then to dance and wiggle her legs around in a circle. When the music stops she pushes the button again and again. She also LOVES wearing beaded necklaces. Everytime I turn around she has found one again and is wearing it. Danica is obsessed with her dress up shoes and insists on wearing crazy costumes when we go to pick up Hayden from school. She gets a lot of attention.
Today we had a field trip for Danica’s joy school. We went to a little place that some sort of cross between a zoo, a farm and pet store. They just had all sorts of animals in cages. Like a llama that kept spitting on kids, a small crocodile, monkeys, snakes, lots of turtles and guinea pigs. A raccoon, a goat, geese, rabbits, an ostrich and some peacocks and other birds. Hayden had an early out day from school so I picked him up at 10:15 and we to this place. It was quite interesting and lots of fun. It’s all free and the main business is actually a pastry shop that sales pudding and creme puffs... I don’t get it but we had a good time and treats were tasty!
Running is going well again. It’s been really rainy in the aftermath of the typhoon that didn’t hit so I have been using the treadmill some but it works out just fine. I am sooooo glad we brought it with us. We didn’t bring out bedroom furniture because it was too heavy and I miss it terribly.
I have been neglecting my record of the funny and enlightening things my kids say, so here is a much over do list:
HAYDEN:
We asked Hayden what story he read at school the other day and he said he couldn’t remember. We commented that it was odd he would forget because he has a super memory. Then he admitted he didn’t forget he just didn’t want to say it because it had a bad word in it. You can imagine my shock wondering what they could possibly be reading. We didn’t want to push him to say it so we let it drop and I was going to ask his teacher but forgot. The next day he said they had changed the title so it didn’t have the bad word. So we got a few more clues out of him and I recognized it as part of series so we looked it up online. The book was called “Junie B. Jones and the Stupid, Smelly School Bus.” It’s true, at our house I have told him that stupid is not nice, it’s a bad work and we don’t say it. I am immensely grateful he has such a solid sense of right and wrong. We had the neighbor boy over a few weeks ago and the first thing he says to me is “I know ALL the bad words...” then we had another 6 year old over and when his paper airplane didn’t fly right he let a word slip. No one heard him except me but when it happened again I quietly let him know the rules at our house. Imagine what they’ll think when Hayden gets on their case for saying stupid.
I tried to wake Hayden for school the other day and he rolled over and said “But mom, I”m nocturnal!”
I asked Hayden to do something and he wasn’t listening so I started my counting to three thing. He turns to me and says seriously “Mom, don’t you think I’m a little old for the counting thing?”
I was asking Alyssa to do something and of course she didn’t really understand. Hayden said “I can solve this!” He turned to her and said “Dodo dadda doodoo da.”
When Danica dumps out her school folder to show us what she was working on Hayden shows a lot of interest. It’s really cute and he uses exaggerated tones to asy things like “Wow, Danica, that is really nice!” “You did such a great job!”
Hayden has learned a lot of Japanese words in his Japanese culture class at school and tells us new things all the time. It’s so fun to hear him and to have him teach me things. The other day he told me “I need my listening mimi’s on” and he pretended to put on his ears.
DANICA:
I was asking Danica to get off the counter and out of the snack cupboard. I asked her repeatedly and she just kept doing it and started saying “I can’t hear you mom!”
Danica has been missing Hayden a lot with him at school and asks me a dozen times a day wear is Hayden?
At the little zoo/pet store/farm place we went her best friend Calvin kept saying “Oh my gosh.” After a while Calvin went home but Danica just kept saying it over and over every time we looked at a new animal!
We took Danica’s binky away a while back but lately she has been stealing one from Alyssa. So I spend half the day trying to get her to give me the binky. Yesterday I bought her some new “pretty shoes” at a little boutique and she was wearing them all day. I told her babies don’t have pretty shoes, they have binkies so if she keeps using a binky I will take her pretty shoes. She snuck a binky into her bed last night so I went and got her shoes and said I was going to take them away. Instantly she handed me the binky and ended up sleeping with her shoes!
